LPG or petrol: why Korean gas sedans took over Bishkek

The real economics of LPG Sonatas and K5s: cost per km, engine life and maintenance specifics.

The Hyundai Sonata and Kia K5 with factory LPI gas systems are a phenomenon of the KG market. Built in Korea for taxi fleets, here they became the people’s choice: business-sedan comfort with compact-hatch running costs.

The numbers

Propane in Bishkek costs roughly half as much as 92-octane petrol. At 11–12 L of gas per 100 km, a kilometer costs 6–7 KGS versus 13–15 on petrol. Over 20,000 km a year that saves $1,500–1,800 — the car effectively pays for itself in 6–7 years.

What to check when buying

Factory LPI is more reliable than any aftermarket install: injectors are designed for gas, valves don’t burn. But check the reducer and level sensors, and above all the true mileage — taxi versions often get rolled back. We verify every car’s history against the Encar database before buyout.
